A Drum-tastic Way to Learn!

My students need quality hand drums to enhance their learning in the music room and the classroom in a safe, fun, positive way.

My Students

I teach music through a grant program that integrates core subjects into the arts. On any given day, I see grades PreK-6 walk through my classroom, where we explore the world, language, math, and sciences through music.

My school is located in a suburb of Salt Lake City.

It is an older, smaller school and it just became a title one school last year. It is located in a wonderful community. I teach all of the 500 students in the school and their beautiful personalities bring smiles to my face. I consider my job to be the best job in the world and my students are absolutely the reason!

My Project

There is a simple primal pleasure that comes from beating a drum, and nothing can beat the feeling of accomplishment that comes from having rhythmic patterns beaten out, intertwine and end with a final crash. But when there are not enough drums to go around waiting for your turn can seem like forever, especially if you are six and a half. Our music classroom is severely lacking drums. Last year we played on ice cream buckets that broke if the students played with enthusiasm. This year we are working on getting quality drums that can be used for drum circles, musical games, and other music projects.

In our music room, these drums will be used to let preschoolers have their first experience playing an instrument, to help second graders figure out how many syllables are in a vocabulary word, to put the finishing touches on a composition about a Greek myth created by a sixth-grade class and so much more!

These drums will help students with everything from memorizing math facts to practicing fluent reading to a beat. These drums will be used to integrate core curriculum with musical experiences to make the students at our school more well rounded and excited about learning.
