This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a 5th grade teacher in a magnet school program. My class consists of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Resources that would serve to enrich my students academically are limited to whatever we make available for them at school. Despite their limited resources, these students have developed a love for reading and writing.
My students are enthusiastic writers and we engage in writing activities on a daily basis. Our magnet program emphasizes the teaching and use of current technologies. Partly for this reason, my students utilize word processing software to compose their work.
We produce our writing on computers that are made available for us in our computer lab. We are a large school; consequently, the entire student body must share these machines and has access to one another’s files (we are only allowed to save work on the computer desktop). This presents a problem. Since the entire school uses these computers, it is not uncommon to have one of my students work on a project the entire week just to have someone from another classroom delete the file accidentally (this occurs with great frequency).
A solution to this problem would be to supply each one of my students with their very own USB flash drive. This would virtually eliminate the risk of losing work as a result of someone else’s carelessness. This would also afford them the added convenience of having the option to work on their writing projects at home (or anywhere with computer access), since these devices are portable. It would also be a great way to prepare them for their future academic life. Learning to negotiate a computer and portable memory devices of this sort are vital skills that every student should possess. The durability of these devices are an added bonus and a single classroom set would continue to be a vital resource for years to come.
Rest assures that a contribution on your part would not only supply my students with the material resources necessary to be a successful student in my classroom, you would also be contributing to the attainment of something far more valuable: knowledge and academic growth.
