Do you remember having someone read Fairy Tales to you as a child? Hearing stories that made you dream, inspired you or even scared you silly? Our students haven't had that opportunity. Many have not seen a fairy tale beyond what Disney has put in a movie. Our Fairy Tale unit will change that.
Our school is a Title 1, Renaissance school in a very transient urban area.
Our families struggle to put food on the table, much less fund any extra curricular activities for their children. Many of our students are new to our country so communication is a problem. Many live in single parent homes or with another relative. Many do not have any means of transportation so parental support in the school is practically non-existent.
There are no "extras," like books in the home. Our school is very tiny without a regular media center. Although we do get to visit a nearby very small public library twice a month, many books are not available to our students. Our first grade students are eager to learn and experience new things. They just need the opportunity.
My Project
I am requesting two sets of 10 fairy tale books for a fairy tale unit to be used with our first grade students. One set of books will be put in our media center for all the students to check out. The other set of books will be made into individual story units, each in a separate bin. The teachers and I will gather curriculum activities as well as props for each of the story bins. The bins will circulate among the classrooms where the teachers will use the activities and book to make the stories come alive for the students.
After each of the story bins has circulated among the grade level, our unit will culminate in a Fairy Tale Bowl, where students will work in teams to answer questions about the stories. Using the craft materials, the children will make wands and scepters to wear to the Bowl. Families will be invited to watch. These materials will enable all the students to participate as they learn while having fun at the same time in what will become an annual event.
This project is so important because our students just don't have a chance to get exposed to the rich language of our classic fairy tales.
Our families can't provide beyond the basic necessities and our school doesn't have the money for any extras. With this grant we can expose our children to many kinds of fairy tales as they learn about the wonderful story elements in an exciting way. They will practice cooperative learning as they work together to prepare for our final Fairy Tale Bowl.
