My Students

An organization just invited us to perform and they are even willing to make a donation to the program and food. But what do we play? What type of music are they talking about? This performance means a lot to the band because it could help us purchase new instruments and accessories. Now what?

My students in my school are like a family.

From beginning kindergarten to graduation, they stay together..like a family. My students are bright and charming students ranging from advanced placement curriculum students to students with learning disabilities. Since music is a team activity, they must work together as one regardless of backgrounds or grade level in order to succeed. They are a diverse group of city kids. They come from Haiti, the Dominican Republic, China, Puerto Rico, and Vietnam. They are all funny, sweet, generous, and engaging.

My Project

I am requesting 1 ASUS computer to compose, listen, and research music to give music back to the community. Our classroom project is centered around the PwC's Financial Literacy Innovation Challenge. The Arts are usually the last thing to get funded in a school. In order to maintain our program, often times we perform for various organizations and sometimes receive a donation in return. These donations help us purchase instruments and other equipment. However, in order to take these performances, we need to research and arrange music for the event. The computer will help my students arrange music using Sibelius, Audacity, and Mixcraft. The students will also be able to research the event and find appropriate music to be performed. We can also use Excel and Google Docs to show teach students how monetary donations are applied to purchases within our program. It also will provide me the ability to email students and place reminders of after school/weekend performances into their calendars. We could even use the computer to make flyers for our fundraising concert in the future.

I have seen first hand how music can influence the learning of students at any age.

My students are so creative and I cannot wait to see and hear the creative music that they compose. Many want this and that, but teaching them how to budget for purchases will also help them budget life after graduation. Please be a partner in their experience by supporting our project and how it can be used to enrich the lives of our students.
