Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is in a high needs district, with over 90% of our students receiving free and reduced-price lunch. Our school goes above and beyond to place our students at the center of all of our work.
My students will be engaged in small group reading instruction in a distance learning format.
They would like a copy of the new book, Mananaland, for a read aloud. It is important for me to have a document camera so that I can model reading and teach explicitly using the book.
My Project
Distance learning has many challenges, for teachers and students. I want to recreate the read-aloud experience for my students that they miss by not being in the classroom. There is magic in a shared reading experience. Students will participate in an interactive read aloud experience, and have opportunities to learn new vocabulary and engage in discussions about the book. The document camera allows me to share the print on the screen, so they can see it as I read to them.
It's so important to have current literature that reflects my students.
The book, Mananaland, is a powerful new book by a celebrated author about a topic they know well, immigration. Together, with the book and a document camera, I can bring the experience of close reading right from the pages of the book to my students.
