Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a low socio-economic area where several family members share small homes or apartments because of the housing crisis. The students that I serve are currently under lockdown in cramp homes, most lacking dedicated learning spaces, attempting to learn away from our beloved classroom.

Our classroom was the safe space the students trusted to learn and grow.

In the classroom, we all had a "home court" advantage, meaning that we had established the environment to suit our teaching and learning needs. Now, the children are in their homes, most under not ideal learning conditions, competing for wifi connectivity, because though they have been provided chrome books by my district and even hot spots, when multiple people share the device, the connectivity slows down and becomes unstable. Distance learning is indeed a challenge for the children that I serve.

My Project

With the reality of distance learning happening up until who knows when, I need to be fully equipped at home to bring as much of a slice of the classroom as I can, virtually into the homes of the children I serve. I would like to do one to one teaching during small group instruction with children with the use of this document camera.

With this document camera, I will be able to make the materials I have on my desk visible to my students as I use them to teach concepts such as fractions or guiding them through brainstorming an idea, as they see the model on my desk on their computer screens during a live meeting.

This particular document camera will not only allow me to showcase the materials on my desk but also has many functions such as different "whiteboard" options and writing tools that can transform my computer desktop into an interactive whiteboard that the students will see projected on their screens. For instance, one of the whiteboard options contains an x and y-axis and another is like a graph paper.

With this document camera, I will be able to get as close to sitting beside my students to teach them, as if almost being in our classroom, sitting next to each other at the same table.
