I teach English to vivacious high school students in the middle of a cornfield in Ohio! The students are strong, passionate and resilient. Some students come into English class only seeing what they struggle with or hate about reading and writing. I hope to encourage each student that they are capable of a passionate, successful present and future, no matter what they have been told before.
These students deserve to know that there are adults outside their families rooting for them now and in their future opportunities.

My Project
Using mentor texts to guide students in improving their writing gives them much more confidence and willingness to try out a new skill. It’s even better when the mentor texts can be student generated; having a quality document camera in my classroom will make it much more seamless to be able to share exceptional writing and projects with the rest of the class. It also helps to have a shared text that students can see modeling and think-aloud strategies as I write, so that writing and revision processes becomes visual for them.
The document camera enables more organic reteaching and celebration within writing.
The annotation tools will enable students to visualize and apply the skills seen in mentor texts to their own writing more seamlessly.
