My Students
I am the teacher of an Autism Support Classroom that supports 1st - 6th grade. Students have sensory needs and rely on modified lighting, noise-canceling materials, specialized seating, break down/cool down corners, snacks as incentives, modified tasks, etc.
Work must be accommodated to their IEP goals and learning habits/frames of mind.
They also require increased support from paraprofessionals. Our assistants often work with students in small groups so we can individualize instructions and make learning more personal.
My Project
In our classroom, we have a library filled with books of all types. Students get to pick books that they think they will enjoy and spend time with those books. While we have lots of books in our library, some students struggle to find books that they connect with. Over the past few years, I have been working to add more inclusive books with diverse characters and books that students can connect to. This project will help me add more books with characters of different races, cultures, belief systems, family types, and more!
Representation is important.
It is incredibly important to me that all students see themselves in the books that they read and that those books act like mirrors that they can connect to. It is equally important that books also act as windows and show students how other people in the world live their lives. The books in this collection are meant to do both and give students a more inclusive library that reflects the world we live in.
These books will be used for whole-class read-aloud, as well as books to add to the library to let students pick out and read. My students love to read, and giving them more inclusive and diverse books is a wonderful opportunity to help them grow!
