My Students
My class is part of one of the most diverse school districts in the USA. Our district has 99 different languages spoke! We live in a unique urban setting that is surround by some of the most beautiful nature in the world. As a teacher, it is part of my personal philosophy that my students feel comfortable and represented by the books and materials in our classroom. Having a diverse classroom means that the materials must feature students and characters of all nationalities and disabilities to help students develop positive insight into the lives of others and reaffirms their own cultural identities.
My class is an amazing group of about 25 students who are all so eager to learn and explore the world around them through diverse reading material.
The world is a crazy place and many of them face a lot of unique challenges in their lives. It is my goal to create a safe space where my students feel welcomed, represented and can escape into books. The following school year is going to be filled with ups, downs, and a lot of uncertainties. I want to do the best by my students and their education.
My Project
In my classroom, we showcase and celebrate diversity in all that we do. This includes the books available to the students in my class which are primarily individuals of color. Students need to see themselves reflected in the books in order to "feel seen." In order to do the best by my students their education, and learning experiences I want them to feel valued by reading stories about people who look like them. It is my greatest hope that by creating a diverse classroom library I will inspire a love of reading and a sense of community where my students feel valued and important. All of the books on this list feature diversity of race, gender, socioeconomic status, disability, culture, and family composition. These books can provide a sense of belonging for all students and can help develop awareness, empathy, and compassion for others.
