My Students

My students are amazing, active little learners waiting to embrace their full potential. They are funny, bright, loving kids who don't always have a reason to smile but do so anyway. 100% of students in our school receive free breakfast, lunch, and also dinner for those who attend the after-school program. Over 50 languages are spoken across the student body, including many students who speak little to no English and are experiencing a new life.

Our city is a vibrant, accepting place where many families are refugees and immigrants.

My students have seen more in their life than many people ever have or will. Escaping wars in Africa, hunger in Somalia and ethnic cleansing in Burma are just some of the battles my students have already faced. Despite all of this, they come to school every day with a positive attitude ready to conquer the day. We love learning and we love the classroom family we've created. We love for helping our classroom feel like a home for us!

My Project

This project will transform my library into a place where my students will feel accepted and connected. It will share the stories, experiences and history of people of their culture and others. These books will provide them with engagement, interest and a love for reading. For some of my students, they don’t see people or characters who look and talk like they do in their text books. This will change that and impact their lives. The books in this project will transform my classroom library into a place where students will want to be and will help them love to read.
