Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a special educator in dire need of technology for my classroom. I teach students with several disabilities, and since my school mainly serves students in the categories of at-risk, low income, ESL, and Title 1, our budget is tight. In the last few months, our budget has gotten tighter with the influx of students from New Orleans.
My concern is that for the last 2 1/2 years I have had autistic students and also some students that exhibited dyslexia. These two disabilities don't fit into the same mold of current reading strategies. To compensate, I have taken numerous professional development training courses in order to help these students. Right now my classroom only has one working computer, and unfortunately I have no technology suitable for students with autism. Autism is a disability that interferes with social and academic learning. Specialized software is needed in order to increase verbal and social skills. The two students I currently have have made lots of progress, but I am sure that with the computer technology I am requesting they would be able to form sentences, write paragraphs, and communicate much better. I am in need of a PC and some technology from Laureate learning systems-The Sentence Master level 1-2. Talking Nouns 2 and Talking verbs.
