This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The wonderful students who attend my school are located in an high poverty, urban neighborhood. Many of them live in single parent households with that one parent working two jobs. Others live with grandparents due to unfortunate circumstances through no fault of their own. They have tough lives but still seem to be happy kids. Our standardized test scores are historically low, but we were still fully accredited for the 2017-2018 school year! That is quite an accomplishment knowing their backgrounds.
My Project
I have incorporated StoryWorks Jr. into my third grade instruction for the past two years.
StoryWorks Jr., a classroom magazine from Scholastic, keeps my students wanting to read on with its varied genres and interesting stories.
I use StoryWorks Jr. during both whole and small group instruction. My students LOVE the intriguing articles and can't wait to take the paired quizzes to see if they really understood the content.
StoryWorks improves both fluency and comprehension while keeping my students engaged. When this project is fully funded, my students will once again be able to enjoy this wonderful classroom magazine for yet another school year.
