What excites me about Katelyn, Katie and Miranda's project is that it gives my students the opportunity to experience first hand what we are learning. An added benefit is that this project is one they made possible on their own, something they worked toward and have ownership of.
My students developed this project idea after having such a difficult time in the classroom grasping some of the more difficult concepts due to the lack of hands-on learning materials. If this project is funded, students will be able to use their own materials to have hands-on learning experiences and complete dissections, rather than borrowing a model from the other classrooms on campus.
Through this project my students will develop many skills that will prepare them for college and their future. Academically, this will help the students better learn the information we are working on in class. This project will help my students socially, because it will give them an opportunity to work with other students, which builds cooperation and teamwork.
In Their Own Words
Our project idea is to have mats for dissecting a pig, kidney, brain, eye and heart, four fetal pigs, and ten kidneys in the classroom so we can do more dissections. By doing more dissections, learning will become hands-on. Through this, we will no longer have to borrow materials from other classrooms, which means we won’t have to wait until they are finished with them. It will also let us see what we are learning in intimate detail right in front of us, rather than trying to learn from a diagram on a screen.
We are leaders in bringing this to life by researching the materials needed to preform dissections. Once we receive the materials, we will go through the directions with the class and help throughout the dissection by going over the steps as we dissect. By positioning ourselves in front of the classroom, we can serve as an example dissection group for others too look at and learn from if they need assistance.
This project is important to us because we want the opportunity to learn things, but not having the mats for dissecting a pig, kidney, brain, eye and heart, four fetal pigs, and ten kidneys to really understand them makes the content difficult and almost useless. It will help the school community by helping the class specifically and the science program in general. If others know that this class has the materials to take learning from memorization to applied knowledge, then they will be more interested in taking it, and the class will be more successful.
