Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students love to explore, build and create. They're usually up for any challenge that I give them. They are big helpers and are always asking if there is anything they can do to help when they finish their projects. My goal is to provide my students with an engaging, fun, and safe learning environment. My school is Title I and located in a low socioeconomic neighborhood where 98% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. We even offer "dinner after the bell" to ensure they have full tummies when they leave. Most of my students are faced with many challenges in the classroom and at home.
I want our classroom to be bright, cheery and a happy place to help build their excitement as they explore their creativity.
My goals is for each of my 300+ little artists to find something they love about art. I understand that not everyone of them will love every project, but I truly hope they will each find something that sparks their creativity. Our room is nothing in the traditional sense because I believe our time together should be fun, messy, filled with discovery and "play" time.
My Project
"The ability to hold a pencil correctly can affect a child's attitude toward learning and school work, their academic achievement as well as their motor/joint development.” After reading a few blogs from other art teachers and some occupational therapists toys like the Super Sorting Pie, Happiest Unicorns and Brainy Colorful Counting Trains will help to build critical hand muscles when these are manipulated with tweezers. The muscles used when grasping and using the tweezers to sort the pieces is very similar to the motions used when cutting properly with scissors.
My goal is to help my students build their fine motor skills in a fun and engaging way that will help begin a strong foundation for their education.
I would love to start the beginning 20 mins of each kindergarten class having two stations at each table. Students would use both stations each day for around 10 minutes still leaving 30 minutes to create art. Box 1 for 2-3 students will be a sorting manipulative game where they will need to use the tweezers to move each piece to help build their hand strength. Box 2 for the other 2-3 students at the table will be a set of Melissa & Doug Clay Play tools so students can create their own lines before using the Fun Dough Scissors to cut the Play-doh. Play-doh is more forgiving than paper and will allow my little artists many opportunities to practice cutting. Ideally, this would keep them engaged longer and give them important extra practice to work on their fine motor skills like cutting. Lastly, these Woodless Colored Pencils by Crayola are thicker than normal colored pencils, will not need to be sharpened and be more forgiving in the grasp of little hands.
