Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a mix of every race, religion, culture, family type, income, learning type, interests, and strengths and weaknesses. The one thing they all have in common is their love for learning, their competitive nature and the way they strive for excellence in all that they do.

Our school has more than 5 different native languages and is about 20% refugee and immigrant populations.

Over 98% of our students' family incomes qualify them for free school lunches and all students get free breakfast in the classroom each morning.

My Project

We have independent reading time in our classroom daily. This time gives students the opportunity to read books at their reading level and on something of interest to them.

This set of books will help students to find more books that represent themselves or their culture.

They will also expand our horizons in learning about new and different cultures we know little to nothing about.

Although I try to include all types of books, a recent program audit of my library suggested I offer more culturally diverse books and made many of these suggestions.
