I am fortunate to be a special education teacher in a life skills classroom with 7 wonderful students. Most of the students in our classroom spend the majority of their day in our self-contained life skills class. All our students have learning disabilities of varying degrees. We have autistic children who are not very verbal and who struggle with communicating. They need quiet places to calm themselves. We have a young student with Downs syndrome who struggles sitting still, but whose smile is infectious. We have two non-verbal, non-ambulatory young ladies who love to sit on the rug with their classmates when we do group activities.
We are a class of hardworking students, dedicated paraprofessionals, and a first-year life skills special education teacher.
We live in a beautiful rural logging town in northern Idaho where many students live below the poverty level.
My Project
The bean bag chairs I am requesting will be used in several ways. Some of our students suffer from sensory overload and these will be great places for them to take a break and calm themselves. This will allow them a soft and comfortable place to settle down and regroup. They will also make wonderful areas for quiet reading and partner reading.
The visual timers will greatly help my students during transition periods, as these can be particularly difficult times for special needs students.
The timer will give them a visual warning that a transition is about to take place.
