A Cozy Corner

My Project

My goal for this project is to create a cozy space for my students. My students often have very difficult circumstances in their lives and my hope is to provide a space that provides comfort to them and gives them a place to be themselves. I love working with my students and am always so impressed how resilient they are when they share pieces of their lives with me.

One of the things I’ve discovered this year is how useful a standing desk would be for my students that often need to move around while they work.

A standing desk would enable them a more flexible work space instead of just sitting at a desk when I am helping them with their work.

The kitchen cart is needed as I frequently buy lots of snacks for my students and need a place to organize and store the snacks. Right now they get piled up in boxes so an organizer would be useful.

All of the other supplies are items that are calming and soothing for the students. The Buddha board, coloring books and markers, weighted stuffed animals, and fidget stress balls. These items will enable them to soothe themselves when their days are stressful. These items are also very useful during counseling sessions. Students feel uncomfortable at times with just talking so having something to do with their hands improves their ability to have deeper conversations.

One of the other things is how much my students love lighting options and my past lighting has broken so it needs to be replaced with new options. It’s amazing how much of a difference the lighting makes in creating a soothing space. When can turn off the fluorescent lights and have soft colorful lighting, the students immediately relax and feel happier.
