Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are a group of bright, creative, and resilient young artists who enter my classroom each day eager to express themselves through art. They live in a low-income community where resources are often limited, yet their imaginations know no bounds. My classroom is more than just an art space—it’s a sanctuary where they feel safe, supported, and encouraged to explore their emotions through creativity.
I am requesting a comfortable couch for my art classroom to create a cozy, calming space where students can take a break when they need it most.
Art is not just about making things—it’s about feeling, processing emotions, and finding peace. Many of my students face daily stress and challenges outside of school, and having a dedicated, welcoming space can make a significant difference in their emotional well-being.
Incorporating social-emotional learning (SEL) in the classroom is essential, especially in a creative space like mine. A cozy couch will serve as a "calm corner" where students can regulate their emotions, take mindful breaks, and reflect before re-engaging in their work. Studies show that comfortable, safe environments improve students’ ability to manage emotions, develop empathy, and practice self-regulation—key components of SEL.
This space will also support students who need a moment to recharge before expressing themselves artistically. Whether they need a quiet place to journal, sketch, or simply breathe, this couch will be more than furniture—it will be a safe haven for emotional well-being and creative growth.
