My Students
As a Title I school, the majority of my students are at or near the poverty level, and at risk of academic failure. While the students with whom I work are eager to do well and want to make good choices, many of them struggle with managing their impulses, strong emotions of anger, frustration, sadness and stress. Life for many of these children can be very difficult; their experiences at home make it challenging for them to focus in school.
They usually see coming to my office as a treat, a quiet corner where they get undivided attention, or a place with exciting toys and games.
Offering a calming environment will help these children find some solace in school and provide the additional support they need to help them thrive in their education. In this space, they also participate in groups where they learn of strategies to help them cope with their feelings, gain problem solving approaches, master socialization skills. These students are highly capable and just need the encouragement and space to achieve their dreams!
My Project
My project supports the growth of emotional self-regulation, self-esteem, socialization, and learning in Kindergarten through fourth grade elementary school students. The bean bag will go in a special ‘calming space’ where children can go to destress, relax, reflect. Also available in this space will be various stress/anger reduction toys such as fidget toys, stress balls, Play-doh, and modeling compound to give a physical outlet for stress.
The various cooperative and skills-building board games teach socialization and emotional self-regulation in group settings.
‘Peaceable Kingdom Mole Rats in Space Cooperative Strategy Game for Big Kids’ and ‘Peaceable Kingdom Race to the Treasure Cooperative Board Game’ are games that develop socialization skills. ‘Mad Dragon: An Anger Control Card Game and Stop’, ‘Relax & Think: A Game to Help Impulsive Children Think Before They Act’ are games that teach children how to regulate their emotions.
Toys such as the ‘Veatree 206 Piece Magnetic Building Blocks with Magnetic Bricks and Sticks’ and the craft supplies will be used for children to play alone or with others/in groups to help them refocus themselves as well as promote cooperation, sharing, and calming strategies.
