I am a teacher of a special education preschool class. I have 12 students, ages 3-5 who have varying abilities who come from all over the school district to receive specialized academic instruction and therapies, if needed. We are located on a public preschool campus with 6 other special education classrooms and 4 other preschool classrooms. Our goal is to support our district's youngest learners and create good citizens in an inclusive environment.
My students are sweet, funny, inquisitive human beings who are still learning how to regulate their feelings.
We are looking for items to build a cozy area in our classroom.
My Project
All of my students like to feel safe and secure. Thanks to some awesome donations, we currently have soft blankets and pillows that we offer to students when they want to lay down, but this also means that they would need to request one or go get one if they wanted to create a cozy area in our classroom. We are seeking donations for a comfy couch to help complete a dedicated cozy area that is available throughout the day.
The Just Like Home comfy couch could serve many purposes for our class.
It can be a sitting area for our students in which to be calm. Students may also bring books to the couch to read a story. Some students need frequent instructional breaks and can also access this area during those times. The couch area can also be a place students go to help self-regulate when they feel like they are on sensory overload.
