Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a drama teacher in a wonderful middle school in Astoria, New York. This is the second year of incorporating drama into the students' programs, and while I am thrilled to be devising a comprehensive program, I am sadly lacking supplies and necessary texts. Moreover, because I teach three different grades, their needs are greatly varied. I have been trying to incorporate English Language Arts into my classroom so that the students can make connections across the curriculum. I think that incorporating terms and authors from their ELA class into our drama classes can only enhance learning and reinforce skills. I want them to see that grammatical skills are extremely necessary when studying playwriting and that script analysis skills are very similar to the skills used to discuss novels. Finally, I want them to understand that, while drama is a very fun class where we can get up, move around, and be creative, there are also several skills that they must master through studying other works and challenging themselves. I am asking for several copies of different texts from authors that they are studying in their ELA classes. I am also asking for several biographies of the authors, as well as of other famous playwrights, so that they can complete an author study, just as they do in their ELA classes. This will help expand our drama library and really help establish my theater program. My students and I are extremely grateful for your support.
