My students need 1 laptop computer to incorporate technology into learning and instruction in the classroom and to begin learning basic computer skills.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
All children should have access to technology, but in my high-poverty charter school we do not have computers for students to use.
I teach Kindergarten at a new urban charter school in a high-need community. Our school has been able to purchase basics such as books, furniture, and math materials, but there is no room in the budget to provide technology for our students.
Our charter school was opened with the mission of providing our students with an excellent learning environment through a combination of rigorous academics and an arts-infused curriculum. The school has done wonders with the materials and resources we have, but we could do more - and better - with some basic technology in the classroom. Teachers bring their own laptops from home when they want to include technology in their instruction. However, students do not have access to any computers and are not learning even the most basic of technology skills that will help them succeed later in their education or in today's society.
It is important to begin computer and technology instruction from an early age. The natural enthusiasm of Kindergartners puts my students at an optimal age for learning. With just one laptop computer for my classroom, the world of technology - Internet, word processing, PowerPoint and a variety of media - will open up to my students immediately. They will have access to the kind of technology that children who do not live in high-needs communities already use every day. I will be able to teach with more technology infused into my instruction, instruct students in the use of that technology, and help them access information in new ways each day. In short, my students will gain the equal footing in education and society that my school hopes to provide.
