Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 20 third graders live on the south side of Richmond, Virginia and attend at Title I elementary school. We are a high ESL population which means my students flourish with the ability to be bilingual at a young age.
They come to school ready to learn and find out the answers to questions they wonder every day.
They're passionate about all things animals and science, curious about history, and ready to take on the challenges of math and reading head on despite being in a completely virtual school year.
My Project
With 2020 behind us, I'm looking towards the future of the rest of the 2020-2021 school year that for us is going to be completely virtual. My students and I won't be face to face at all this year and I want to make sure that they are completely prepared at home to be able to learn to the best of their abilities. I have a great group of kids who, like most kids, misplace and use up all of their supplies at home just like they would in the classroom. I want to make sure that my students don't have to worry about not having paper or a pencil for the remainder of the school year to the best of my ability.
But, at the same time, I want to make sure that they don't spend the whole entire day on a screen or not be able to be creative just because they're at home without supplies.
That's where the math manipulatives and other assorted supplies come in. Math is so much easier to learn when you have something in front of you to look at and can actually move around with your hands. I don't want my kids to lose the experience of stations just because they're at their kitchen tables. With the fraction pieces and rulers, my students will be able to fully experience harder concepts without having to squint at a screen all day and not being able to tangibly use a ruler. The flashcards will give students extra practice without looking at a screen.
The virtual school year is hard enough without having to worry about basic supplies. I don't want my students to fall behind with something that's avoidable like this and want to help them be successful as much as I can.
