This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
“Most of what I really need to know about how to live, what to do, and how to be, I learned in kindergarten. Wisdom did not lie at the top of the graduate school mountain, but there in the kindergarten classroom.”
Robert Fulghum
Our school is in a high poverty area where almost all students receive free breakfast and lunch.
For some of my students this is their first year in school. Despite this, my students enter kindergarten with a sense of wonder. They love being in school, learning about the world, each other, and themselves.
My Project
One of my major goals for students and myself is to build a sense of community in our classroom. I want my students to leave kindergarten knowing they belong to a world bigger than their family. I want them to know that they are accepted, respected, and their individuality cherished and encouraged. Children learn best in the context of social relationships. Some of the best ways I have found to build community is for each child to have their own space, use music, and continue to nurture their sense of wonder and curiosity. The cubbies will help students organize their own things such as backpacks, sweaters, and lunch boxes. This will help them see and take care of the room as their own. The teaching cart and mobile science cart are to be used to teach lessons around the classroom and outside especially with for outdoor science lessons. The speaker will enable all students to hear the music that we play from my computer since as of now we have none.
The materials that I requested will help me to do just that--build our own microcosm of the the larger world that one day they will partake in.
Just like Robert Fulghum said in the beginning quote, there is so much wisdom that children learn in the kindergarten classroom about what to be and how to live.
