A Community Classroom Becomes a Multi-Sensory Environment for All
Help me give my students a sensory classroom where they can promote self-regulation while jumping into a Sensory Mat, engage with floor-time exploration on large mats, and optimize the learning environment with fluorescent light filters.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a school-based occupational therapist in Miami, FL, I work with students who benefit from a wide array of intervention. At my school, I work with students diagnosed on the Autism spectrum (ASD) and who have emotional/behavioral disabilities. A majority of my students struggle with self-regulation; therefore, positively impacting their ability for school participation and success is a priority. Last school year, my school introduced a community sensory classroom for these students to have a safe space to decompress in a judgement-free, sensory-friendly environment. I am looking to supplement this room with sensory equipment in order to implement fine motor and visual perceptual activities within a multi-sensory approach to further compliment the space.
Improving my student's overall sensory readiness will improve their independence with school-based occupations; therefore, leading to increased self-confidence, promoting motivation, and improving participation throughout the school day.
My students are hard working, fun loving individuals who do their best everyday.
My Project
The multi-sensory classroom environment will provide students with a multitude of learning opportunities via self-regulation and school readiness. The large play mats will promote student floor-time exploration by bringing activities to the floor surface and/or walking along a self-made path with an adaptable balance beam. Preparation and facilitation can be addressed by promoting self-organization by jumping on the trampoline and/or crashing into the Sensory Pad. Optimizing the student's attention and overall learning readiness within this sensory environment can be adapted by modulating the room's ceiling lights with flourescent light filters, providing alternate tabletop surfaces to explore learning, adapting classroom chairs with the chair bands, and/or introducing a bubble light lamp for a sensory ambiance.
Cultivating the students' individual needs will provide a positive experience in their overall awareness which will create a successful educational experience.
Setting up this sensory community classroom with the right equipment and materials will enhance the importance, as well as the awareness, of each student's occupation to school stakeholders.
