This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have 32 energetic fourth graders in my New York City classroom. Many of the children come from low-economic households, but they have big dreams. They understand the importance of a good education. Most of the students attend after-school programs as well, so they spend the majority of their day in school.
My students work both in homogeneous groups and in heterogeneous groups in order to accomplish their daily learning targets.
We not only focus our academic goals, but on our social-emotional goals as well. We are involved with the Leader in Me program and practice our 7 Habits of Happy Kids. We understand that in order to be successful in school, we must always try our best. We motivate each other and work as a team.
My Project
My students will be more comfortable sitting on a rug or on flexible seating to read. I want to be able to give them options on where they could work not only more comfortably, but more importantly more productively. The crates and fabric will be used to make flexible seating. I would like to make it a project that they can work on with their parents. They will cut plywood, wrap it with fabric and attach it to the crates to create the alternative seating. The storage cart would be used to store their supplies and their personal book baggies. Studies show that flexible seating is especially helpful for students who have extra energy to burn. It promotes tolerance because the students learn to understand that children learn in different ways and their needs are different. They also learn to take turns using the flexible seating.
I want the children to feel like the classroom is their second home.
It should be an inviting place that they look forward to coming to everyday. They need to be able to move around and work both in groups and independently. With your help, this could be possible.
