Our school is home to 750 students in grades Pre-K to six. This includes special ed, gifted and talented, and ELL students.
We have a wide range of learners and socioeconomic backgrounds.
We also have multiple languages spoken in our school. Students walk into school every day ready and excited to learn.
Our school is a Title I school in Maine where 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. We also receive a free fresh fruit and veggie snack daily available for all students.
My Project
People often say “reading takes your places.” But in order for that to happen, my students need a nice inviting space to curl up in and get lost in a good book.
Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them.
During independent reading time, they will be able to choose a location in the space that works for them. With your help, they will be able to choose from big bean bags, giant comfy pillows, and padded, portable seats with a back.
Currently, my students will only able to sit at a chair and table or on the floor. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more completed than when they are just sitting at the table.
