Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a Title I school where 80% of our students come from low-income households. Our school is a melting pot filled with kids from all walks of life, and over 80% speak a language other than English at home. My classroom is a self-contained gifted class consisting of both 4th and 5th grade students. These children are our future leaders and have a unique way of looking at the world. I want to help facilitate the right environment to help them grow and succeed, but our school doesn't always have the means to get them the resources they need. In school, students should have a level playing field, but we know that not all schools are the same, so I'm asking for your help to give my students a leg up and a chance to change the game!
My Project
My students need standing tables as part of our classroom’s flexible seating environment. An uncomfortable student is a distracted and unproductive student. These standing tables will encourage students to seek their best spot to stay calm, focused, and productive. This benefits students as they work on finding the way they learn best. We need standing tables to increase engagement for those students who are naturally restless and find it difficult to concentrate in a traditional seating assignment. Comfortable students are engaged students. In addition, these standing tables also provide students with the opportunity to make presentations within small group settings or in front of the whole class. I am excited to incorporate this student engagement tool into my classroom!
