This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Reading truly is thinking, but you have to be in just the right place to do the right kind of thinking. It is important to be as comfortable as possible. I am a Literacy Coach and have been working in conjunction with the Assistant Principal of Literacy as well as the librarian to create a warm environment in our library which is already in need of updating. Kids often sit on the floor instead of the wooden chairs that align the room.
Our school was built in 1937 and with the exclusion of the computers has been altered very little. We are on the SINI list and most of our students get free lunch. Our funding for new furniture and "extra's " is limited. We also have another obstacle, space.
I know our students will LOVE these ottomans, because they will be able to sit alone or push them together in one big block to read in a group with their friends. I think it will also bring warmth to our library. The librarian as well as other staff have noticed how many students are coming in great numbers to take out books and go to the library during the open lunch periods. These ottomans will re-define our space as welcoming and updated. The color was chosen because they are our school colors. Why ottomans? We can store them separately against our computer tables. Giving life to an old tired library is essential to keep kids interested in reading, which will ultimately encourage them to keep learning. Our teachers also are an essential part of this equation. They use the library as part of their lessons as well as a place to plan instructional lessons.
In donating these ottomans we will be able to create a warm and inviting environment for our kids to read, explore and grow. I truly believe that when students see that we as educators are "trying", they will see what happens when they try. The ottomans will bring a sense of newness to an old space.
