My students are Special Education Kindergarten students who attend a suburban Title I school. These students have a wide variety of physical and/or cognitive disabilities. Despite all of these challenges, they still come to school with smiles on their faces, full of questions, and ready to learn. Each day they inspire me and everyone they come in contact with to be the best they can be!
I am lucky each and every day to be their teacher and hope to inspire them with new activities and experiences so they can be the best they can be.
These students love to inquire, learn from their friends, and learn in the most comfortable environment for them. In order for all students to be successful: we vary learning strategies, incorporate group work, complete different hands-on projects and make sure ALL of their needs are met. They are an incredible group and each year I consider myself to be so lucky to have the opportunity to watch them grow over the year.
Having such a diverse set of students, all with different needs, can pose a challenge for teachers. But the best way for them to learn is to provide them a comfortable environment where they can be themselves and learn at their own level. Such positive things happen when students can learn comfortably, which is why Flexible Seating is so critical to have in Special Education classrooms.
They can read and work comfortably on a couch, or stand at a desk and work!
Typical desks and chair are not ideal for all students to learn, so providing alternate seating to complete work will enhance their education, their self esteem, their motivation to learn, and they will all around feel better about themselves.
Promoting a comfortable, inviting and colorful environment allows students to feel at ease with their learning styles, techniques and themselves. Adding these items to my room will continue to build on the vision I have to provide an inviting classroom with flexible seating to truly teach to each individual learner.
