This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I joined my new school for the 23/24 school year, and my school is wonderful, inviting, and engaging place. Students are excited to arrive and feel comfortable in their learning spaces. I want to take that to another level in my own first grade classroom with these items.

One major thing missing in my classroom was a rug to place at the front of my classroom.

It's very important for younger students to move throughout the day to keep them engaged. We spend a lot of time learning on the carpet at the front of the classroom, but this year they sat on the classroom carpet. It wasn't comfortable, nor was it inviting. I want this rug so students can quickly go to their spot and be ready to learn.

Another issue we faced this year was a lack of heavy duty headphones. They spend time each day on a phonics program that reinforces skills while I pull small groups for intervention. Often the headphones we used broke in a very short amount of time, so I had to scramble to find another pair that worked. It would be wonderful to have a nice set ready to go at the beginning of the year.

My final item is one that is one that may not seem important, but it really makes a difference when lining up. Students each have a number assigned to them, and transitioning from place to place is quick and simple with these numbered Velcro dots.
