My Students
In just a few days 26 enthusiastic 4th graders will enter our classroom door for the first time ready for an exciting year of learning and exploring.
Our school serves students from pre-kindergarten through 8th grade, with over 1,400 enrolled.
The student body is widely diverse and 58% of students come from low-income families. In our ICT classroom, we are striving to create a comfortable classroom environment in which students look forward to coming each day to develop their academic and social skills.
My Project
The meeting area is an important destination in our classroom. It is a place for students to come together for whole-class learning experiences.
The classroom rug provides a comfortable, structured place for all 26 students to gather for lessons.
For example, all math, reading and writing lessons as well as read alouds require students to spend time in the meeting area. Therefore, it is important that this is a welcoming area that still allows each student to have his/her own designated space.
The meeting area is not only used for lessons, students can opt to sit on the rug throughout the day to complete independent assignments or to work collaboratively in partnerships or small groups. We encourage students to select seats within the classroom that will allow them to do their best. This freedom means that the classroom has to be set up with different options for the students to choose from. It also encourages students to reflect on their own learning styles and work habits and to make smart choices for themselves.
The classroom rug is a central part of our daily activities in the classroom.
