Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My recently-arrived immigrant high school students are doing double-duty in the classroom. Not only are they learning the skills and the content that all American high school students need to learn, they are also learning a new language! I often use images, photographs, and other visual resources to help them develop the background knowledge and vocabulary they need in order to access challenging texts.
A color printer would help me regularly provide my students with these materials and help ensure their academic success in their new country.
It would help me create learning experiences like showing students a series of images from the original production of A Raisin in the Sun to discuss the relationships between the characters before reading the play; or having students analyze the elements in stills from science fiction movies for before reading an afrofuturist short story; or to explore the setting and history of Scotland before reading Macbeth.
