My Students

My 4th grade students are amazing! Through the eyes of my junior scholars, I see that flexible seating enables various modes of learning engagement and collaboration. Last year I introduced a few flexible seating options, and I observed students excited to enter the classroom! They were making personal choices for their best learning style and encouraging others to make good choices as well!

My students have convinced me, through their actions and choices, that flexible seating creates a more engaging and collaborative community in our classroom.

It’s exciting to see the students gather on the carpet, cushions, or crate seats to engage during our whole group math lesson. Others move up closer to alternative seating options, productively, all on their own! Research tells us that 4th graders still need movement in the classroom. I believe this to be true. The students make personal choices when it’s time to transition from whole group to independent work by moving to an area of the room with flexible seating that fits their needs. When it’s time to collaborate, the students are incredible! Flexible seating is allowing them to work with different students to share their ideas & knowledge, ask questions, and become leaders.

My Project

The purpose of this project is to provide more flexible seating options to allow student space for personal focus, movement if they need to find a better choice; easily pair up, collaborate in small groups, or engage in whole group lessons. I chose items that will provide more options for my students to work throughout the classroom.

I observed my students motivated to engage in in both independent work and collaboration when they were given the opportunity to choose their flexible seating option.

The wobble seat allows a little movement for students who need that wiggle to help focus. The lap desks will allow the students to sit on the floor, cushions, or stools and have a big work space right at their fingertips.

The best outcome of flexible seating is how the students are learning to choose a spot that is best for their own learning engagement, encouraging others to do so, and learning the respectful and productive skill of collaboration. For my students, flexible seating is a part of the learning engagement-not a break from it!
