This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Is it fair to make little TK and Kindergarten students sit on a dirty carpet, just because the district cut the cleaning staff to almost nothing. Can you imagine a classroom, with breakfast, that is only swept once a week and vacuumed maybe twice a month. Well if you can, that is my classroom.
My students are young, excited Transitional Kinder and kindergarteners.
My students are made up of 24 four-, five- and six-year-olds. For most of the children, this is their first experience in school. TK and Kindergarten now is a full day program, all academic and very successful. The children will soon be readers, writers and whatever their future holds. The children I have face a lot of outside challenges. They are in an area that is very financially challenged. The school is all on free breakfast and free lunch and is a Title I school.
Our school and district has been facing huge budget issues. This has greatly effected the cleanliness of our school. We have only 2 janitors and not full day. Our classrooms are only swept once a week and vacuum maybe twice a month. Last year with the Breakfast in the Classroom and lack of cleaning, our classroom had furry friends.
I want my students to be in a clean space, with a clean carpet they will sit on for hours a day.
My Project
A kindergarten/TK class uses a carpet more than they use their desks. We sit on the carpet for lessons, stories, sharing and more. They sit on the carpet with their clipboards, white boards, markers and erasers ready to learn. When the children are not sitting on the carpet they are doing YOGA, exercising and dancing. On the carpet each child has their own square and their own space.
Unfortunately, due to the lack of cleaning provided by our school, our current carpet looks horrible. It looks very dirty and dingy and shampooing it hasn't been able to save it. The carpet is the first thing you see in the classroom, so no matter how cute the boards and desks look, it is impossible to overlook the dirty carpet.
I am also requesting a vacuum to help keep the carpet clean. Although this isn't my job, carpets should be vacuumed more than a few times a month.
I am asking for a new carpet and a vacuum to keep this carpet clean.
My students will walk into the classroom and see a clean carpet and their own spaces to learn. The children will no longer be sitting on something dirty and dingy that gets washed once a year. The carpet is as important to a kindergartener as text books are to upper grade student.
