My Students
My students can't afford supplies, books or field trips. School is everything for them. All of the students at my school are eligible for free breakfast and lunch. 18.4% of our families now receive Supplemental Social Security Income or Public Assistance. Our student population is racially and ethnically diverse. My school has a tradition of being a neighborhood school, but it is now a school in transition. Over 20% are in ELL and/or Indian Education or SPED programs. We have students from Somalia, China, the Philippines, Vietnam as well as Natives from rural Alaska. Our school is an older, urban school located near two military bases. Many of my kids are the children of deployed military personnel.
Many of my students are deemed high-risk, their families are struggling economically, and our school lacks many of the resources of other schools in our district.
My students represent all the best things about America. They come to school everyday with warm smiles and they try very hard to learn everything they can. They struggle because they have essential needs that are not being met by our school because our budget is shrinking.
My Project
Every week, I teach library skills to every K-6 student in my school. I have the task of making sure that I provide all my students with a clean, germ-free library learning environment. Lately, we have had a larger than usual outbreak of colds and flu. Our building is old. The library tables and chairs are old. The computers in the library are used by all students. I love the fact that everyone comes to the library. After all, the library is the heart of the school but lately I have become aware of the fact that the library is also a breeding ground for germs.
My students are an amazing group of economically disadvantaged K-6 grade students who need the help of donors to provide them with a clean, germ-free library so they can learn and succeed.
I am asking for hand sanitizer so my kids can clean their hands before getting on the keyboard. I am also asking for disinfecting wipes so we can clean the tables and common areas. My students also need anti-viral tissues because we do not have the money to purchase them.
Please donate and make a difference in the lives of my students.
