A Clean Slate: Learning About Lunar New Year

My Project

Our classroom is a space full of flexible work areas but due to the high numbers of students and the large cumbersome desks and tables we currently use, we cannot effectively use the space fluidly.

As Lunar New Year approaches, I am planning a series of lessons to highlight the multicultural world we live in.

We will learn about the Chinese philosophies that guide the celebrations at this time of year as well as the superstitions and things to avoid. We will be reading Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin which highlights Chinese Folk Lore. I have planned several calendar wheel activities that will lend themselves to the use of round tables.

The whole unit will culminate just before the actual day of Chinese New Year and we will refresh our workspace by implementing some "Clean Slate" activities such as cleaning, refreshing, organizing (with a mini lesson on Feng Shui) and sweeping away the bad luck of the previous year. We will switch out our large cumbersome desks and tables for these two round tables which will allow for better movement (both physical movement and energy movement) within the classroom. Students will get to see the change that happens when implementing aspects of these ancient traditions. Best of all, these materials will be used year after year and these lessons can be repeated with each Lunar New Year. I cannot wait to change the energy of our cluttered classroom while teaching my students about the traditions of other cultures. This is going to be amazing.
