A Clean Slate: Dry Erase Boards for Science Learning
My students need dry erase lap boards to practice their science vocabulary and test taking strategies for the NY State test.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Ramirez's classroom raised $229

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My class sizes are large - at least 31 students in each science class I teach. Q: How do I assess EVERY student's knowledge during a lesson? A: Having each student prepare answers on individual dry erase boards will allow immediate assessment of ALL students.
Students in my classes come from countries all over the world - Bangladesh, Jamaica, Guinea, Mexico, Dominican Republic.
About half are English Language Learners and several have special education needs. Most students live at or below the poverty level, and several live in some of the worst neighborhoods in the Bronx but travel up to 1.5 hours to attend my school.
These students WANT a good education. They WANT to go to college. They are rich in cultural and ethnic identity, however they struggle to reach national academic benchmarks of achievement.
My school is a unique high school in the Bronx. We are truly an international community of teachers and students. Our students hail from over 40 countries and our staff have all spent significant time abroad, mostly as Peace Corps volunteers. We strive to support all students in meeting and exceeding academic standards so that they can go to college and succeed in America or wherever their paths take them.
My Project
I am requesting a classroom set of dry erase lapboards and accompanying markers and erasers. Lapboards will allow ALL students to participate in challenging activities at one and allow me to do rapid, immediate assessments with a visual scan of students' answers as they hold up the boards!
Some activities for which students can benefit from lapboards: vocabulary reviews, test practice, opinion polls, reading comprehension checks, writing practice, visualization exercises, spelling practice.
These lap boards will be used by ALL students I teach.
That amounts to 130 students! As a teacher, having a way of doing rapid, immediate assessments of students' understanding can be an invaluable teaching tool I can use to guide the pacing of any lesson and gage which topics need more or less review. For students, the use of dry erase boards involves ALL at once (not just the person who is being called on) and makes all students accountable to demonstrating understanding.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
