Help me give my students a place where they can have their own personal space to share, create and just have their own spot when we gather as a class community.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is a high poverty school where 98% receive free lunch and free breakfast. I teach 21-28 students every year. Many of my students face many challenges at such a young age. Many are being raised in a single parent home or by a grandparent. My goal each year is to provide a safe environment and a place where all children can thrive and succeed. As an educator I try to provide my students with a place where they can feel like they are a part of a family. My classroom is somewhere the students can come and leave their worries of home behind so they can focus on their education and while having fun!
My Project
My classroom rug was damaged due to terrible rain storms. Our classroom rug is the place where we gather all through the day to do mini writing lessons, calendar time, academic games, music and come together as a classroom community. Children need a clean space to do this. Having a rug also helps me teach my students about personal space. A large area rug also is kind of the centerpiece for the room. It "anchors" the room making it a special gathering place that everyone wants to be. I know that my students would be thrilled to come in this year and have a brand new rug to start off our year on!
