This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The carpet in my kindergarten classroom has been there for ten years. Ten years of students sitting on it, walking on it, throwing up on it, having bathroom accidents on it, and of course learning on it. Although the carpet is cleaned every summer, it is time for a new one.
My students approach life with the enthusiasm and curiosity that all five-year-old children seem to have in abundance.
Despite living in a low socioeconomic area where their parents struggle to make ends meet, they are incredibly hopeful and looking forward to the future. My students' parents want the best education possible for them, but due to financial constraints, many cannot afford to have books, puzzles and other educational toys at home. It is up to me and the school to provide these wonderful, amazing, eager and bright kids with a wide variety of learning tools. We are a Title 1 school, which means that we do get funds to improve the academic achievement of the disadvantage, but not enough to provide every classroom with all the "extras" that they need. In fact due to all the budget cuts, we are running very low on essential supplies such as pencils, crayons, scissors, erasers, and even multipurpose paper. Thus, a new carpet would be deemed "non-essential."
My Project
My kindergarten student spend a great deal of time sitting on the carpet. They sit there for calendar time, story time, whole group instruction time, and for singing time. When they sit on the carpet, my students need a well defined area that is theirs to sit on. Having this well defined space, allows my students to quickly sit down and to have their personal space that is theirs only. Having a carpet that has five different color rows helps with classroom management as I can easily send the color row that is sitting the nicest to go back to their desk first or call on a particular row to do an activity first. Having a five color row carpet also helps when students need to do partner talk as they are told to turn to a student in a particular color to discuss their ideas with.
A carpet with a well defined place to sit is an essential element in a kindergarten class as student are learning classroom routines and how to respect the space of other students.
With your generous donation, my students will have a brand new and clean carpet to sit on.
