Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have you seen the joy and wonder in a child's face when they enter a library or a book store? Well, I want to bring that excitement to my classroom. A classroom within a library. As the love of reading grows in my classroom, I need enough books to support that love.

This year I have 24 students.

An even split between boys and girls. Most of my students are not reading on grade level, but have a high interest in learning to be real readers! Many of my students do not have regular access to books at home. We are a title one school in California. Over 70% of our school consists of second language learners and 85% qualify for reduced or free lunch.

My Project

I've heard that a teacher should have "A classroom within a library, not a library within a classroom." This year my students are being exposed to a way of teaching reading called Readers Workshop. This structure of teaching reading allows children, not the teacher, to select just right books to read quietly in a nook daily. This means the kid's eyes are on text that interests them and that are at their independent reading level 45 minutes per day! Research shows the more reading you do, the better you get at it. In order to run a program like this, you must have a plethora of books available. Students are reading an average of 10 books per week. Research shows that a classroom should have 20 books for every one student. I must build my library to support the amount of reading that my students will be doing. I also need to have books that span the genres. If students are exposed to this many books and taught to truly comprehend the way real readers do, imagine the power in that.

We've all seen the news and the data.

Students are not performing up to their potential. Much of what they need is a love of reading and exposure to books that tap into their imagination, knowledge of science and the world around them, the love of math and books that support tolerance and social skills. Being surrounded by and having access to books where they spend most of their day is critical. Many ask to borrow books overnight making an impact on their siblings at home! Help support this!
