Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school was originally created by a group of parents unhappy with the public school options in their neighborhood. We strive to maintain a racial, ethnic, and economic mix because we believe that integration and equal access benefit everyone. It is now part of a diversity pilot project in NYC and remains committed to making progressive education accessible to all.
This year, I will be teaching first grade for the first time.
My 24 first-graders are a unique cohort because many of them have not been in a school building for the last year and a half. They will be learning the ABCs at the same time they are learning how to be in school. All the kids returning to classrooms this fall will present with a wide range of developmental needs, and I want my classroom to be flexible enough to meet them where they're at!
My Project
For the past ten years, I have been teaching older elementary-school students. That means a decade spent collecting and purchasing books, supplies, and furniture for a room full of larger, older children. Now I'm making a big, exciting switch and will be teaching 5- 6- and 7-year olds in first grade! I need help quick-stocking a classroom that will make them excited to come to school each day.
For the kids, first grade means shared reading from Big Books, tempera painting at easels, playing pretend during Choice Time, sitting in a big circle for Morning Meeting, building in a large block area.
For their teacher, first grade means I need some basic supplies! For example, some of the tables I have are too big for first-grade bodies, and result in wasted space in my small room; I want to replace them with smaller round tables so we have enough room for all the areas of the classroom. I need a small, low easel I can tuck into our meeting area for daily morning messages. We also need table-top easels so that 4 children will be able to paint with tempera each day during choice time. And in the block area, I need the large-size (expensive!) hollow blocks which first-graders love to carry around and use for building big.
