This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My amazing high school students are all recent immigrants who are learning English as their second, third or even fourth language. My students are from more than 20 countries and speak more than 6 different languages.
According to NBC, Boston is the third most expensive place to live in the United States, and gentrification is impacting our schools and students' families.
With no end in sight to the housing crisis, it is vital that I make my classroom and curriculum welcoming and trauma responsive for all my students.
My Project
Students in my ESL classroom participate in a reading program that combines direct reading instruction and independent reading time. My students are from more than 15 different countries and speak more than 7 different languages.
This donation of these books will support cultural understanding and reflect students' diverse cultures, interests and experiences.
Educator Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop coined the phrase "mirrors, windows and sliding doors" in an important educational article about the need for diverse literature in classrooms. This collection of books will provide the "mirrors and windows" that will allow my students to see their own experiences in texts and to understand the experiences and cultures of their diverse peers.
