This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students need a leveled library in order to have their reading skills grow. Over the years I have seen how my students' reading levels grew as they moved from level to level.
My students are in first grade.
The class is a special needs class and each child has their own individual challenges. They come from low income families. Our school's budget gets smaller every year. I want to give my students every opportunity to make a better life for themselves. Last year our school was relocated due to the damage from hurricane Sandy.
My Project
Having a classroom library is essential. Many of the books that are in our class are to difficult for my students. Some just don't have a known reading level, so the children do not know whether the books are too hard them, and that leads to them being frustrated. It is so important for them to be excited and motivated to move and grow from level to level. One of my favorite things my students will ask me is, "Can you test me now? I think I am ready for the next letter"
Reading is so important.
First grade is a crucial grade were the foundation of life long readers is built. Help me develop the love and skills necessary to create the brightest and best future of our country.
