Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach 13 - 17 year old young adults in the heart of New York City with a variety of learning, hearing, visual and emotional impairments. I currently work as the Special Education teacher in the Algebra and Geometry classrooms.
Our students come to us as 9th graders with very low assessment scores from their middle schools.
Students in New York City Public High Schools are required to pass 5 Regents Examinations (standardized tests) in English, Math, Science, Global History and U.S. History. Our teachers recognize how wide the achievement gap is— which pushes us further and makes us work harder in order to close it.
Having a classroom iPad will bring interactive learning to students’ fingertips. Often, students in my classes are passively learning from the board and they lose focus. Giving my students an iPad and actually bringing an interactive video/manipulative to their desk will be a total game-changer! My students react differently to technology than they do to a person standing in front of them explaining things.
Using an iPad in the math classrooms will allow students to see math in the real world and, ultimately, it will change their thinking about math in general! This iPad can also be used for students to use math apps to reinforce learning and give students targeted math practice to prepare for upcoming standardized tests.
