This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come to me from over 20 countries and speak nearly a dozen languages. One language we all learn to speak is English, but also the universal language of science. My students all learn how to ask questions, make careful observations, and think critically about problems that affect us all: how to eat healthy, how to sustainably feed our world, how to protect our natural heritage, and what makes us human.

One thing that unites all of these problems is that we need a lot of technological tools in our classroom to keep up.

Computers are essential for research, communication, collaboration, and even data collection.

My Project

It has been many years since we received our classroom computer through the generosity of the Donorschoose.org community. Like all computers, it has reached the point of obsolescence, no longer fast enough to run the programs we use most. Instead of a new desktop system, I am asking for a more mobile solution, a Surface Go computer that can double as a classroom desktop and a mobile learning platform.

When we venture outside to record data, be it bird populations, temperature, or habitat measurements, a mobile system gives us all kinds of flexibility.

Much of our probeware still needs a laptop to function. A Surface Go can come outside to our schoolyard or park, then be our workstation for printing and manipulating data when we go back in. It can stay connected to our desktop microscope when indoors as well, allowing us all to view the microcosmos together.
