I teach preschool students in Chicago. Our school has a high level of low income families and 99% of the students receive free lunch. Many of my students do not have books in their home and are in need of more exposure to good literature. I want my students to be able to choose a book that they are comfortable looking at or trying to read. At present, I have a small collection of books in the classroom but it is impossible to allow any books to go home. In order to allow my students to achieve growth in learning how to read, I need books available in the classroom that they can have access to. These books will be used for recreational reading, independent reading, and a lending library. In addition, my students will be engaged in drawing their favorite part from the books they choose and dictating their interpretation of the stories at school and at home. Acquiring a library of books that is readily available to the classroom that are fiction, non-fiction, fairy tales or nursery rhymes will aid my students in becoming successful readers, increase background knowledge, improve vocabulary and build their self-esteem. The books included in the set include classics such as The Cat In The Hat, Corduroy, and Is Your Mama a Llama? from Lakeshore Learning.
