In my classroom we're working on building STEM skills through dramatic play while building on our money counting skills all at the same time through role play. I want to create a classroom store with the students having jobs cashiers and customers creating a rigorous way to sell products and gain a mathematical knowledge through role play with money. Each month, we will have a theme with what our store is selling, and every day there will be two cashiers and three customers that will be purchasing various items in our classroom store with their money.
Through this dramatic play station, the students in my room with learn how to apply mathematical money skills along with an engineering aspect that goes along with creating the correct food choices requested.
For example, a customer can ask for a "half" of an orange or "1/4" of a piece of pizza as we have learned about it math when they get to the cashier. They can also request vegetables or fruit, and then the cashier will use those science skills learned in class to define what is bought and present it to the customer. Each child will have a role in the store to either prepare the food requested in STEM terms or count out the money needed or taken at the register..
These skills are not only essential for a classroom, but will then transfer over to real world situations and how we use the same mathematical and engineering skills in the real world when we go to the store as part of our normal routine in life.
By building STEM skills in the classroom through dramatic play my students will build math and science skills, making it a life-long learning process starting in our class store!
