A Class Set of The Pearl (and a Little Shakespeare)
Help me give my students the classic novel "The Pearl" by John Steinbeck. We need enough copies so all classes can read and enjoy the book at the same time!

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a Language Arts teacher at a middle school in New York City. The population of my school and class is very diverse. Over 95% of my school's population receives free lunch, which is a strong indicator that the overwhelming majority of students come from lower-level income households. This, however, doesn't slow us down. Not one bit.
I have 96 incredible students who LOVE to read books together, as a class, especially "The Pearl" by John Steinbeck.
My classes love reading books on their own, but a favorite over the years has always been this classic. Reading books together helps students who sometimes struggle by partnering them up with a group of their classmates. Everyone wins when everyone works together. Teamwork makes the dream work!
My Project
The Shakespeare books will be a perfect fit for my classes. The original Shakespearian text is on one side, while the "translated" version is printed on the opposite page. This will bring the amazing works of Shakespeare to kids who never dreamed that they could read his work.
We need a class set of "The Pearl" by John Steinbeck so every student in every class and read and enjoy it together!
I've taught this novel many times throughout my many years of teaching. Unfortunately, books get worn down, no matter how closely you look after them.
With a fresh class set on hand, my classes and I will be able to enjoy this amazing tale this year, and for many school years to come.
