My Project
My goal is to get a class set of Look Both Ways by Jason Reynolds to use as a whole-class novel in the spring. Look Both Ways is a thought-provoking read that reflects my students' lived experiences. It features a range of characters, representative of the diversity of our school. Each of the ten stories in the book centers on the daily lives of middle schoolers, from boogers to bullying, secret crushes to surviving cancer.
While my classroom does incorporate book clubs, I love doing whole-class novels because there is something about reading together that strengthens the sense of community in the classroom.
This year, I have one section that is reading significantly below grade level. Throughout this year I have been differentiating and scaffolding my usual ELA content to best meet their needs. They are curious, motivated students, who genuinely do want to improve in their comprehension skills.
As I review my curriculum, I find that the usual whole-class novel we do in spring may be a step beyond their zone of proximal development. I want to introduce a new book with them to best meet them where they are at. They have loved the whole-class novels that we've done in fall, and I hope that they can love Look Both Ways as well.
